This Week in Indoor Farming
Amazon is taking a leadership role in reducing its carbon footprint and making its operations more sustainable. To this end, the company's Climate Pledge Fund has invested in Hippo Harvest, a climate-tech start-up using cutting-edge technology to tackle food waste and land use. Hippo Harvest has developed a more environmentally friendly way of growing lettuce that uses 92% less water and 55% less fertilizer. The lettuce is grown in greenhouses close to the customer base, which helps reduce carbon emissions from transportation.
The innovative growing process used by Hippo Harvest reduces the amount of land and fertilizer needed and addresses the problem of methane gas emissions from food waste. The company uses a closed-loop, direct-to-root fertilizer system and machine learning to efficiently farm plants, which helps reduce food waste. Additionally, its greenhouse in Pescadero, California, serves as a test case for addressing water shortage and rain storms in the local agriculture community.
Amazon Fresh customers in select San Francisco markets can now purchase lettuce grown with no pesticides and packaged in 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. This move is another step forward in Amazon's commitment to sustainability and aligns with the company's goal of powering its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025. Hippo Harvest's CEO, Eitan Marder-Eppstein, expressed excitement about maintaining the partnership with Amazon as they work to innovate cultivation methods that tackle significant issues in the food industry and agriculture sectors.
Kroger, one of the largest grocery retailers in the United States, has taken a significant step towards sustainability by partnering with Gotham Greens, a leading indoor farming company. The partnership aims to bring greenhouse-grown produce and plant-based foods to customers across the country. Kroger's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and achieving zero food waste in landfill by 2025 is aligned with Gotham Greens' goal of creating a food system that is more resilient and equitable.
Over 300 Kroger stores will offer Gotham Greens' produce, with plans to grow to nearly 1,000 shops by the end of 2023. In addition to fresh produce, Gotham Greens' plant-based dips, cooking sauces, and dressings will be available in nearly 2,000 Kroger locations. These products are made with minimally processed, high-quality ingredients, including sustainably grown herbs, making them an excellent choice for environmentally conscious consumers.
Gotham Greens uses hydroponic growing systems that use up to 95% less water and 97% less land than traditional field-grown farming. This results in producing the highest quality and sustainably grown, which is crucial in light of the growing challenges in the food system caused by climate and supply chain issues. The company is set to own and operate 13 greenhouses across nine states by the summer of 2023 and is eager to introduce its products to new markets. The partnership between Kroger and Gotham Greens has continued to grow since its inception in 2020, and both companies are dedicated to creating a more sustainable food system.
