This is also true for CRISPR, a technology that unlocks qualitative benefits, not necessarily quantitative ones." On the same wavelength, Chris Higgins notes, “The technologies that are likely going mainstream today are those that were first introduced in the market about 10 years ago. Things like improved and more consistent organic fertilizer, technologies like TomSystem used in greenhouse vine crop production that reduce the use of plastics in farming operations, and energy-efficient LED grow lights that qualify for energy rebates are becoming mainstream and are now proven at scale.”

Daniel Plant sees the Middle East as a burgeoning hub: "The vision for CEA that is painted in the press releases from the region will not be what comes to fruition, but the ambition plus the fundamental need now has the region on track to become a significant CEA hub."

Daniel Plant expresses cautious optimism about the UK's potential: "I hope when you ask me next year to choose the United Kingdom as my answer... If the United Kingdom allows agricultural markets to reach equilibrium, greenhouse development will boom on that island nation. The United States: Yet To Reach Its Peak

Chris Higgins points to specific states as emerging leaders: "There have been some interesting developments in the Middle East & South East Asia, but we are hyper-focused in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean islands.  States in the East and Northeast, like Virginia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina, are attracting investments that allow farms to target the largest population concentrations, while states like Colorado rapidly expanded to service the cannabis industry and now have quite interesting opportunities for local food producers. The USA market is so big that there is plenty of space, unlike smaller countries such as the UAE or Singapore.”

“Maybe we’re a bit biased, but we are extremely encouraged by what’s happening from a research perspective in the United States. The USDA through its Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is investing considerably in the study of indoor agriculture - from technology to crop production to productivity - to close the gap between traditional farming and modern CEA.” Michael Koziol commented.

Initially, Harvest London focused on the specialty crop market, growing edible flowers, Southeast Asian herbs, Mexican herbs, and other unique ingredients. This early phase targeted chefs, offering them access to exotic and unusual ingredients.

Harvest London, under the expertise of Chief Scientific Officer Matt Chlebek, has experimented with over 200 varieties, including herbs, leafy greens, fruiting vines like tomatoes, and even root crops like carrots and radishes. However, Chris recognized the challenges of scaling with specialty crops and shifted towards more market-driven selections like salads, mixed-leaf salads, and herbs.

Looking to the future, Davies sees potential in expanding into the fruit and vine market, including tomatoes, aubergines, cucumbers, and chilies. He also anticipates growth in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics. Harvest London supplies to the food service industry, with clients like the London Pizza chain Pizza Pilgrims and corporate canteens of major companies like Google, HSBC, KPMG, and J.P. Morgan.

Regarding Harvest London’s scalability and growth plans for the next one to five years. Chris emphasized that starting a vertical farm is relatively simple, as plants will grow with necessities like water and light. The challenge lies in optimizing this growth.

Davies highlighted that Harvest London positions itself primarily as a farming company, not a technology firm. They collaborate with a conglomerate experienced in building glass houses and vertical farms, streamlining the process and reducing risk. Recognizing that scale is crucial in vertical farming, Davies explained the importance of finding the right investors with patient capital and understanding the vertical farming space.

Davies said that vertical farming did not always fit with the venture capital model, noting its focus on rapid growth and high returns, which may not align with the realities of building sustainable farming operations. Instead, Harvest London has engaged with private equity, particularly infrastructure-focused investors like the Foresight Group. They are known for their work in energy transition projects like solar, anaerobic digesters, and battery storage.

These infrastructure investors view vertical farms as part of the next wave of sustainable infrastructure projects. Unlike venture capital's expectation of a 10x return quickly, with most investments failing, vertical farms can offer investors steady returns over a longer timeframe. This approach reflects a different financial model for building farms, where investors are more comfortable with significant long-term investments, viewing them as assets contributing to sustainable development. Davies' strategy indicates a shift in how vertical farms are financed and scaled, focusing on long-term sustainability and profitability rather than rapid, unchecked growth.

The vision of automation 

Dan emphasized that the core goal of Seasony is to integrate a new style of automation into vertical farming and indoor agriculture. He believes that controlled environment agriculture will be a crucial component of the future food system, especially as the world faces the challenge of feeding a growing population under changing climate conditions. Dan compared the evolution of vertical farming technology to the trajectory of renewable energy. It started as an expensive niche option but eventually reached an inflection point where it became the most cost-effective choice due to technological advancements and scale.

He explained that the industry began with fully manual operations and then moved into what he calls the second wave—large-scale, highly automated vertical farms inspired by manufacturing and logistics models. However, recent challenges in the industry suggest that neither extreme of no automation nor excessive automation is ideal.

In her keynote, Christine Zimmerman-Loessl, Chairwoman of AVF, emphasized creating a robust platform for the agricultural industry. Reflecting on the substantial financial support allocated to aid farmers, she stated, “Billions have been allocated to support farmers who have been struggling for decades.” According to a study by Bayer, 71% of farmers are adversely affected by climate change, with rising fertilizer prices adding to the challenges. Christine underscored the potential of CEA, stating, “production is marginal for now, but the perspective is interesting” in combating climate change and an aging farmer population. She also stressed that “tech plays a pivotal role today” in controlling various parameters, though food waste remains a major issue to tackle.

Later on the Annual Vertical Farming summit had Dr. Karen Fabbri who elucidated the EU’s Food 2030 strategy and the deployment framework in Horizon Europe 2021-2027. She highlighted the immense pressure on land and biological resources due to urban food consumption patterns, saying, “80% of food produced is consumed in urban areas, where three-quarters of the EU population live.” She emphasized the need for innovations in indoor farming to enhance energy efficiency, optimize logistics, and increase biodiversity, introducing the concept of Industry 5.0 and asserting that “VF & CEA is part of Industry 5.0.”

Adam Abadi of Cultivatd reflects a resilient outlook despite the financial hurdles, underscoring enduring interest in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA). A Visit Of A Strawberry Vertical Farm Near Dortmund

On the last day of VertiFarm, I had the chance to visit vGreens, a Strawberry vertical farm near Dortmund, with Vertical Farming Podcast host & Adam Abadi, Business Development Manager of Cultivatd.

Strawberries grown in vertical farming systems result in a consistent, delicious yield with a fraction of the water and land resources required by traditional farming methods. Though many companies have tried to grow strawberries in vertical farming, few are yet to be profitable. Still, the work done in studying the various varieties suited for vertical farming and the continuous innovation in lighting systems opens a potentially profitable segment.

Vertical farming is a rapidly growing industry that seeks to provide eco-friendly and locally-grown produce while reducing conventional agriculture's environmental impact. The European Commission has recently approved certain advanced genomic technologies, which could help speed up breeding programs tailored to the specific conditions of vertical farming. Rudy Van den Berg, the Commercial Manager at Artechno Growsystems, provides insightful commentary on how this breakthrough could transform the vertical farming industry.

Company Background: Artechno Growsystems' Journey

Artechno Growsystems specializes in automated vertical farming solutions, particularly in hydroponic cultivation systems. Founded in the late 1980s by Art van Rijn, the Artechno aims to revolutionize the stagnant field of horticulture by thinking creatively and innovatively. Over the years, Artechno has diversified its expertise into various fields, such as water purification, automation, robotics, and processing. After establishing the Artechno Group, the company re-focused its Growsystems division to specialize in turn-key automated vertical farming and deep flow technique systems. The company aims to become the leading global supplier of automated vertical farming technology, aiming to grow the perfect plant.

Challenges in Crop Breeding for Vertical Farming

Van den Berg acknowledged that the professional breeding of vegetable crops suited for vertical farming is still in its infancy. The key lies in adjusting the plant architecture to fit multilayer cultivation, especially for crops like tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, and eggplants. "Breeding companies hold the key to developing new types of planting models for these crops, allowing them to be grown profitably in Automated Vertical Farms," said Van den Berg.

The Potential for Crop Variety in Vertical Farming

When asked about the potential for vertical farming to accelerate new crop varieties, Van den Berg pointed to significant differences among existing varieties, especially in crops like arugula. "By necessity, we work with varieties developed for open fields or the greenhouse. But there is still so much to gain," he added. Artechno Growsystems collaborates closely with breeding companies and customers, fostering a knowledge exchange crucial for innovation. Artechno Growsystems' AVF+ technology can grow a wide range of crops. "We have the commercial solution ready for lettuce, leafy greens, herbs, microgreens, and young plants." Research is ongoing for other crops like strawberries, tomatoes, and peppers, which present challenges in scaling up profitably in vertical farms.

The Role of Big Data and Data Security

Van den Berg emphasized the importance of big data in controlled environment agriculture for optimizing processes and cultivation recipes. However, he also warns that data security is crucial, especially with speculations of cheaper software potentially compromising data to unauthorized entities. Van den Berg noted that data alone is insufficient for successfully operating an automated vertical farming factory; it must be integrated with other elements like software. He suggested that while growers are generally aware of the importance of data, the key lies in knowing how to use and secure it effectively.

Future Outlook: Human Expertise and Data Analytics

Rudy Van den Berg envisions a future where vertical farming is accessible anywhere and closely linked to the market. While his company's cultivation processes are virtually automatic, he believes there will always be a need for human expertise, such as agronomists and operators, for continuous improvement. He sees big data as playing a significant role in this vision, as it provides a reliable source for analysis and system development. Van den Berg predicts combining data analytics and human creativity will mainstream mass production in vertical farms.

In a candid interview with Glenn Behrman, President of CEA Advisors, and the mind behind The Growtainer®, we delve into the intricacies of indoor and vertical farming—an industry often magnified by hype and built on idealism. Behrman, a seasoned entrepreneur with over 50 years of global Horticultural experience, offers a sobering perspective on the industry’s trajectory, challenges, and misconceptions. 

The Genesis of Growtainers®

My career in horticulture began when I opened a small retail plant store in New Haven in the 70’s. Over the next 25 years, I built that business into a very successful chain of retail stores, wholesale foliage distribution centers, garden centers, and an import division stretching from NY to Philadelphia. 

“When I first read about the early projects in indoor farming in Holland in 2010, I immediately understood the potential that indoor farming/vertical farming had. I spent the next year or so asking questions, researching, traveling to Holland often, visiting facilities, learning more about vertical farming, and speaking with the industry’s pioneers, Behrman recalls. His journey began with a vision but was grounded in practicality. Unlike many startups that rely on venture capital, Behrman bootstrapped his way, giving him a unique vantage point on the industry’s evolution.

“Today, we see that the companies that were built with sweat equity, self-funded, or relied on very little investment at the beginning are the ones that are resilient in these difficult economic times because their business model does not rely on external funding to succeed.”

The Silicon Valley Mirage

Behrman laments the role of Silicon Valley investors in shaping the industry’s narrative. “It’s a shame to see how Silicon Valley investors hijacked the entrepreneurs in an industry that was growing before the pandemic and encouraged all the false hype around it,” he says. According to him, the notion that indoor farming will “feed the world” is a misleading fantasy. It’s a method, not a panacea, and it exists alongside traditional farming—not as its replacement. “In my opinion, there was too much easy money being thrown at indoor farming by sophisticated investors that knew 9 out of 10 startups would fail. Agriculture is a long game and will never provide the returns the VCs require. Everybody knew that, but the VCs had to invest their capital, and unrealistic valuations blinded the entrepreneurs.”   

The Produce Industry vs. Software Industry

“Regardless of how high-tech your solution is, you are a food producer and are not a software company,” Behrman warns. Startups often enter the space with a tech-centric mindset, assuming the value is in their tech. This is a grave mistake. “It’s about Unit Economics; for a commodity like lettuce, how can you justify that your product costs $3 to produce when your competitors retail it at $2?” he questions. The produce industry is driven by price competitiveness, and Indoor Farming’s “green” or “local” descriptions have not significantly altered consumer behavior, especially in an inflationary economy. 

The Identity Crisis

Behrman observes that many startups suffer from an identity crisis. “They can’t decide whether they are a tech company or a food producer,” he says. This leads to operational inefficiencies, as companies over-hire and over-design, losing sight of their core business. “When I have a project, I don’t do everything myself; that’s impossible. I rely on the expertise of my network,” he advises. “I look at each project and ask myself who I need to collaborate with for the project to succeed. My first question is, what are you growing?      

The Excel Sheet Paradigm

“It’s not rocket science, and you don’t need to invest millions of dollars at the beginning; you can start small and build your business,” Behrman states. He likens the success of an indoor farming project to an Excel spreadsheet. “The more lines you have in the left column, the more variables you identify, the easier it is to tweak and adjust until your values are optimized, and your chances of success increase.”

Initiated after the success of the 2008 Science Barge project – the first hydroponic installation in New York City – NY Sun Works has evolved from a humble greenhouse experiment into a full-fledged organization committed to promoting sustainable urban farming. Since its inception in 2010, it has built an impressive portfolio of urban farms, educated young minds, and championed sustainable and local food production in New York City's five boroughs.

NY Sun Works' journey over the past decade and more has been inspiring. It now reaches 250 schools, with plans to add 100 more farms to its roster by next summer. That's not all. The organization aims to extend its reach beyond NYC, targeting other cities once it has achieved certain milestones within the metropolis.

One of the most remarkable aspects of NY Sun Works' initiative is its intense focus on education. As of the 2022-2023 school year, the organization had engaged with over 120,000 students, offering STEM programs to the K-12 year-round curriculum. Moreover, teachers are trained to implement the NY Sun Works program effectively, providing students with comprehensive, hands-on learning experiences.

The Executive Director and Program Founder, Manuela Zamora, briefly explained the organization's mission, emphasizing the importance of healthy, green, and locally produced food. Zamora said, "If we transform the teaching of science, sustainability, and climate education in NYC schools by bringing hydroponic farming into the classroom, we will not only grow a generation of environmental innovators empowered to create solutions to global climate challenges but also address immediate needs." Thus, the organization fills this gap, encouraging students to grow food and consume fresh, nutritious produce.

An impressive 97% of the participating schools are public institutions, with 80% belonging to Title 1 schools, serving communities with high socio-economic needs. The prioritized goals shared by these schools and NY Sun Works revolve around sustainability and climate science, growing and learning about food, and consuming fresh produce. Integrating such practices in everyday school helps students make informed decisions about food, empowering them to contribute positively to their health and the environment.

NY Sun Works has also demonstrated sensitivity to the diverse cultural context of NYC, growing produce that aligns with the various cultures they engage with. "We try to grow produce that is culture-relevant to adapt to the various cultures we are dealing with and facilitate the involvement of families within the program," explained Zamora.

Further underlining the organization's commitment to education, students are assessed not only on their learning aptitude and attitudes but also their career paths. This practice assists in building effective Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that gauge the program's success.

In light of the labor challenges the agricultural sector is grappling with, NY Sun Works has launched a Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) certification. Zamora shed light on the intent behind the program, saying, "We created the CEA certification to train the next generation of growers." The high school certification program dedicated to CEA saw 180 students graduate this year. The plan is to offer the certification to 15 schools this fall, which, as Zamora notes, "helps create a new generation of students ready to be employed in the CEA industry."

Despite its challenges, the pandemic prompted NY Sun Works to develop innovative solutions. The organization created an at-home kit for kids, facilitating their online learning and teaching experiences. This quick adaptation further emphasized the organization's dedication to its cause.

Looking ahead, NY Sun Works envisions expanding its operations across the USA and reaching Latin America. This ambitious goal aligns with their mission of promoting sustainable urban farming, combating food insecurity, and nurturing the next generation of environmentally conscious individuals.

In essence, NY Sun Works is not just fostering urban farm growth but cultivating a brighter, greener future. It's planting the seeds of sustainability in young minds, nurturing them with knowledge, and watching them blossom into responsible, informed, and capable adults ready to take on the world.

VPOT is designed to enable the growth of green leafy vegetables in various indoor, outdoor, and vertical spaces, illustrating the system's adaptability. It can be installed on walls or structures, and its irrigation system can adapt to hydroponic or drip methods. A notable example of VPOT's versatility is its upcoming installation in the walls of a hall of the first hotel Dune in Mexico and Tulum with its own hydroponic vertical system and a controlled environment. This includes natural light and GE lamps, set to be implemented in August of this year in a 5-star boutique hotel. Visitors to Tulum will have the opportunity to see VPOT in action, reflecting the system's capacity to transform spaces into food-producing, sustainable solutions for companies, restaurants, hotels, universities, etc.

Made from 100% recycled plastics, VPOT claims to emphasize sustainability through its material choice and recircle irrigation system. However, the effectiveness and environmental benefits of using recycled plastics in agriculture are areas that could benefit from more comprehensive research and validation.

Vertical Farming: A Growing Market

The vertical farming market, which includes systems like VPOT, is projected to reach $24.11 billion by 2030, with a CAGR of 22.9% from 2021 to 2030. While this growth indicates interest in the field, it raises questions about scalability, long-term sustainability, and the potential impact on traditional farming practices.

Social and Environmental Considerations

ORIGEEN, a Mexican startup, presents its product as part of a broader mission to impact social, environmental, and economic spheres. They emphasize food security, psychological benefits, preserving natural resources, and circular economy principles. While these goals align with broader sustainability movements, quantifiable metrics and third-party validations of these impacts remain crucial for a complete understanding of the system's effectiveness.

Accomplishments and Future Projections

ORIGEEN's accomplishments include implementations in various communities and participation in industry events. The company plans further expansions, but monitoring these developments will be essential to assess the scalability and real-world efficiency of the VPOT system. Additionally, ORIGEEN offers a “Do It Yourself” e-commerce kit. The accessibility and practicality of this product for average consumers remain areas for exploration and potential scrutiny.

We recently sat with Bob Holm, CEO of Sky Greens Canada, to discuss Sky Greens' role in the AgTech sector and their future outlook on the industry. Sky Greens Canada specializes in low-carbon, hydraulic-driven, commercial vertical farming systems. Their mission is to revolutionize indoor and greenhouse growing through intelligent, space-saving, rotating growing solutions. They aim to address food security issues in Canada and worldwide, where many fresh fruits and vegetables are imported. By providing efficient vertical farming technology, they strive to increase local food production and reduce reliance on imported resources. Their ultimate goal is to transform the farming industry through innovative green urban solutions that have minimal impact on land, water, and energy resources, ensuring food supply security, safety, and accessibility.

Sky Greens offers the first rotating vertical farming system to address the demand for locally grown fruits and vegetables. Their patented system consists of rotating tiers of growing troughs mounted on an A-shape aluminum frame. The technology allows for uniform sunlight, irrigation, airflow, and nutrient distribution to the plants as they move through the structure. The economic benefits of their system include high yield, high quality, and flexibility for different crops and growing media. Additionally, the system is energy-efficient, using natural sunlight and a unique hydraulic water-driven rotation system. It also minimizes water use through an enclosed reservoir system and recycling. The low-maintenance design and scalability make it a promising solution for efficient and sustainable urban farming.

Bob stressed that Sky Greens Canada is "farming systems focused" and does not feel confident growing food "on the grid" through a completely controlled environment. " We need to let the sun in, whether it is a greenhouse, a sprung structure, or geothermal energy. It can be possible and cheap".

Do you think people aren't researching enough into whether they should be growing in a controlled environment or greenhouses?

"Yes, 100%. There is a lot of hype around these stocks doing well with controlled environments, but it's truly up to the grower. We need to build everything around the grower because they're the ones that will lead the farms to success. " mentioned Bob. He emphasized that controlled environment growing has a big buzz because it's a new tech. Still, it is costly as opposed to traditional vertical farming, which has been practiced worldwide for years. "We don't want to get looped into CEA (Controlled Environment Agriculture). CEA is failing; Vertical Farming is the art of getting more plants per square foot. CEA might not work, but vertical farming is a proven successful way to increase crop yield".

With Climate Change creating more environmental challenges, do you think we will increase CEA farming?

"I think the future of farming will be hybrid," mentioned Bob. " If you have a good environment now, why not use it? We must let the sun in; we need to take the free energy coming out of the earth.

What do you think about the rise of AI and Machine Learning in agriculture?

"It is a great idea, but I would rather have humans in the field. They check the plants, see the bugs, and find problems. Humans are the number 1 defense for plants.
